The baseball cap became his calling card: “MGH: I’m #1!” Joseph Riley wore it everywhere.
The Stoughton man was proud to be the first person to have an experimental heart valve operation at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2008. The new aortic valve saved his life, which once again was filled with family gatherings and independence.

“He put us all at ease, never let on how frightened he was,” she said.
“He had two wonderful years,” said his son Paul Riley, 53, of Halifax, one of five children. “He would visit us all at our homes for cookouts. He took short trips. He was able to stay completely independent.”
Since then, 31 other patients have had the surgery and Mass. GeneralBalance Valves
will soon submit results to the federal Food and Drug Administration for approval of the procedure.
The morning after Riley died, his son e-mailed the sad news to Palacios and cardiologist Kenneth Rosenfield.
“Your father was a hero for us,” Palacios replied. “He had no hesitation when he accepted to become the first patient. He leaves with us a big legacy and became a source of inspiration for many others.”
