STOUGHTON — The baseball cap became his calling card: “MGH: I’m #1!” Joseph Riley wore it everywhere. The Stoughton man was proud to be the first person to have an experimental heart valve operation at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2008. The new aortic valve saved his life, which once again was filled with family gatherings and independence. Each time he returned to the hospital for checkups, he’d Gate Valves tip the cap, a gift from his son, at the staff with a sweet and jaunty smile. When Riley died July 1 after a fall three weeks earlier, there was great sadness. “He had just been in and was so happy. When he had an appointment, people would come down to see him,” said Donna Vadala, who works with Dr. Igor Palacios, an interventional cardiologist who did the procedure.. In June, Riley was going to daily Mass at the chapel at Good Samaritan Medical Center when he fell and fractured his skull. His heart valve was working fine, but he developed an electrical problem in his heart, got dizzy and fell. He was 90. On June 25, 2008, at age 88, Riley was the first patient in New Safety valves England to have a percutaneous aortic valve replacement. In the new, minimally invasive surgery, doctors use a catheter to reach the valve, instead of opening the chest wall. A month later, he was going up and down steps, driving and shopping, and he was off oxygen. “I’m breathing so good, I can’t believe it,” Riley said then. “They did a job on me and it came out great.” Only then did he tell nurse Maryellen McNamara that he’d been “scared to death” before the surgery. “He put us all at ease, never let on how frightened he was,” she said. “He had two wonderful years,” said his son Paul Riley, 53, of Halifax, one of five children. “He would visit us all at our homes for cookouts. He took short trips. He was able to stay completely independent.” Since then, 31 other patients have had the surgery and Mass. GeneralBalance Valves will soon submit results to the federal Food and Drug Administration for approval of the procedure. The morning after Riley died, his son e-mailed the sad news to Palacios and cardiologist Kenneth Rosenfield. “Your father was a hero for us,” Palacios replied. “He had no hesitation when he accepted to become the first patient. He leaves with us a big legacy and became a source of inspiration for many others.” Rosenfield responded: “What always impressed me about your dad was hisForged Steel Valves terrific spirit, optimism and love for life. He didn’t just want to ‘be’ alive, he wanted to ‘feel’ alive. “All of us who were involved with his care feel good about enabling him to have that higher quality of life, to see that great smile on his face at regular visits. He will always bring a smile to our faces when we think of him.” Sometimes caregivers and patients become like family, and that’s howNeedle Valves the Rileys felt about the hospital staff. “It meant a lot, to have the doctors take that time and care,” Paul Riley said. “It means so much to me.”
